Our 5-day “Long Weekend” Option
Upon arriving at Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Day 1, you will be greeted by our Founder & Chairman, Lance Harrell, who will be hosting you your first night. Lance will tell you about the history of our foundation and give you a deeper understanding of what you are helping us to accomplish.
The next morning, Day 2, Lance or another member of our team will accompany you to a small tropical farm near Miramar, owned by a local woman, Gretel, who has donated some of her land for us to grow the starter Jatropha plants we need to seed our larger plantation. Gretel has also graciously allowed our volunteers the use of her home for camping and restroom facilities. She will be your local guide and cook while you stay with her.
Your next day and a half, Day 3, will be spent on the farm, helping the Empowered Biofuels team with various projects. Depending on the season, these may include planting, harvesting and processing the Jatropha seeds into oil, or participating in community outreach or educational programs. Whichever activity you are a part of, you will be learning about the gender and environmental issues we are facing and interacting with the local community – all while enjoying the beautiful tropical surroundings and delicious local cuisine.
On the morning of Day 4, it will be time to pack up and say goodbye to Gretel as you will be spending the day at a nearby beach for some well-deserved R&R with your Empowered Biofuels team leader. The following morning, Day 5, you will be heading back to the San Jose area so you can catch your flight home or end your time with us and continue on exploring Costa Rica on your own.
Our 7-day “Full Week” Option
Your experience with this option will be the same as above, except for two additions:
- Day 2 will be in Heredia, where you will spend the morning learning, hearing local women share their experiences, and discussing the eco-political and gender-political climate of Latin America. Then you will have a free evening in Heredia/San Jose.
- You will have an extra full day, Days 4 and 5, at the plantation, which will give you more time to make a meaningful impact on current projects.
